Waders are generally long-legged shorebirds that live around the coast or near estuaries and wetlands. Normally they will have long legs which help when feeding in water or mud. Some also have very long bills to help with probing for food.
Often migratory, some will travel huge distances between summer feeding grounds and winter breading grounds. Local wading birds in NZ will often migrate internally within NZ depending on the season.
Many species seen here travel from the Arctic region and some from Asia for the summer. Additionally a large number of vagrants, and stragglers will arrive at the same time.
NZ has approximately 63 listed species of wading bird. All are endemic / native birds and are protected. The exact number keeps changing as new bird sightings are confirmed and species data changes.
