Swanphens and Coots are (as their name suggests) birds of the swamp and open water. They usually have long toes adapted to their environment and a large shield above their bill.
NZ has 5 species of Swamphen & Coot. 1 endemic, and 4 native (including vagrant birds.)
They are:
Takahe,
Australian Coot,
Pukeko,
Black-tailed Native Hen
and Dusky Moorhen.
