Shags, often commonly known around the world as Cormorants, are aquatic birds. They usually have a medium length neck and short legs with webbed feet. In NZ they are often found on coasts or near bodies of water.
A similar bird group, Darter (found in many parts of the world) is occasionally recorded as a vagrant in NZ from Australia.
New Zealand has 13 species of Shag & Darter. 8 species are endemic (only found in NZ) and 5 species are native (including vagrants).
All Shag and Darter are protected by New Zealand law.
