Owls are usually nocturnal (only come out at night), birds of prey. They have a noticeable disk like face with large eyes. Their size can vary greatly between species.
NZ has 3 species of Owl. The Ruru/Morepork and Barn Owl are both native birds; and the Little Owl is a European introduction.
Kingfisher are stumpy birds with a large to very large bill usually looking too big for the rest of the bird. They have a very short neck and their sizes very a lot depending on species. They often hunt by perching overlooking an area their prey will be. For example sitting in a tree overlooking water (fish) or mudflats (crab) is common behaviour.
NZ has 2 species of Kingfisher. The NZ Kingfisher/Kotare is native; and the Australian Kookaburra is introduced.
