Passerines are sometimes also called song birds or perching birds. They are the single largest grouping of birds in the world. Found basically everywhere except Antarctica.
During the mid to late 19th century (and to a lessor extent the 20th century) it was common practice to import and release perching birds in NZ. The result being we've been stuck with them ever since.
There are 16 species of introduced passerine in the wild in NZ. Making up just over a third of the introduced bird species found in New Zealand today.
