Heron, Egret, Crane, Bittern, Ibis, Pelican, and Spoonbill photos from New Zealand.
Generally long-legged, medium / large wading birds found near water. Heron, Egret, Crane and Spoonbill usually have longer more slender necks than Bittern and Ibis. Pelican are large dumpy birds with huge bill and noticeable throat pouch.
Including vagrants, New Zealand has 16 listed species of bird in this section. They are made up of
8 Heron / Egret,
2 Bittern,
1 Crane (Brolga),
2 Spoonbill,
3 Ibis, and
1 Pelican (Australian Pelican).
All can be considered native birds and are protected by NZ law.
Note : As species within this bird grouping can be migratory; its possible even probable that new vagrants will arrive in NZ regularly. So the list above should not be considered fixed. For example: it seams likely that as of 2012, the Sarus Crane will need to be added to this list.
