Grebes are freshwater birds that generally spend most of their life on the water. They will dive to feed, and build their nests floating. The birds usually won't fly, although they can well when needed. They will often carry their young on their backs when the baby birds are small.
NZ has 4 listed species of Grebe.
1 is endemic, the NZ Dabchick. The other 3 being native birds. Although the Hoary-headed Grebe is only seen as a vagrant from Australia in NZ.
