Gamebirds in New Zealand. Gamebirds are generally small plump ground dwelling birds.
They were introduced into New Zealand to provide stock for recreational shooting. In many areas of NZ, bird numbers are artificially maintained by regular release of captive breed animals.
All modern gamebirds in NZ are introduced. Our endemic ones having been killed off by the end of the 19th century.
There are 12 species of introduced Gamebird in NZ. That makes them the 2nd biggest category of introduced bird (after introduced passerines) in NZ.
In almost all cases; gamebirds in NZ should not be considered genetically pure. Often releases came from differently derived stock. Also hybridisation has certainly occurred in wild populations over many generations.
Photos of different gamebirds in New Zealand. Organised by individual bird species.
