Pateke picture.
Today's wildlife picture is another from the "to review" pile. In fact another from the Tiri stack. Its of Pateke or New Zealand Brown Teal. An endangered endemic NZ duck which as you can see are very beautiful. Its sad to think there are only about 1000 of these birds left in the world. These ones were part of a small group on Tiritiri Matangi Island. The water colour here is partly due to it being late in the day (note the long shadows) and partly to the drought conditions and lack of water at the time.

It is always really great to see Pateke somewhere. I also have photos of these great ducks from Tawharanui. I'll have to dig one up and post soon.

Brown Teal Information.

Maori name(s) : Pateke.
Abundance (In NZ): Rare.
New Zealand Status : Threatened protected endemic (Only found in NZ).
Found (in NZ): Very small parts of North and South Islands. Auckland and Campbell Islands.
Subspecies photographed : Anus aucklandica chlorotis. The subspecies that breads on the NZ mainland.
