Its a close up picture of Greg the Takahe, from Tiritiri Matangi Island last year. I found this pic while looking through my ever increasing backlog of photographs. Its actually an alternative edit of my other Takahe photograph published, which I guess I'd decided not to publish. Usually I'd never bother posting two versions of the same photo, or even two photos from the same series. But this one does look good, so why not. Perhaps I should review that policy.

Remains of a North Island Kokako photo.
As some may have noticed, I'm in the process of playing with the layout of GCN. There are now less photographs displayed on each page, but no content has been lost. You can still scroll through each pic using the pager links at the top or bottom of each page, or the subject links on the left. Please do leave a comment and let know what you think.

Now on to today's photo. It is of the remains of a North Island Kokako. A rather sad photo I admit. Especially given how rare the Kokako is. Its estimated there are only a few hundred pairs left in the world. (The South Island Kokako is now officially extinct.) This photo was taken on Tiritiri Matangi Island a couple of months back. As you can see there is not much left of the poor bird. As Tiri has had all pest species removed the most likely culprit is a Australasian Harrier (Kahu). This does raise one of the ethical questions those working in conservation have to deal with. What do you do when one native is killing off another? Generally in NZ if a threatened species is involved, least threatened gets killed. Kahu are an abundant native. Kokako are a very rare endemic. While Kahu is a protected species in NZ, Tiri is one of the few places where DoC rangers are authorised to kill Kahu if required. I don't know the exact outcome in this situation, but it doesn't take a genius to work it out.

I will come up with a much nicer photograph of a Kokako for everyone very soon.
Tiritiri Matangi Island, New Zealand. 2010. Photograph taken with my Nikon D300 DSLR camera." />
[fernbird picture]

A Fernbird photograph.
For me this is a very cool photograph. No so much for its photographic qualities, but its subject.
Fernbirds are very difficult to find let alone photograph. This one is only the second we have seen, and it was pure luck. While checking out the "bunkhouse dam" on Tiri one just happened to appear. Originally on the other side and well outside the range of the 200mm lens I had with me; it slowly crept around the edge towards us. Keeping very still I simply sat there and let the little guy come over. I suspect it was checking out the humans as much as anything else.

There are 6 six subspecies of fernbird now - the Chatham Island subspecies being extinct. I'm unsure exactly which variety this is. North Island (Bowdleria punctata vealeae) would be a fair bet. However since this was taken on Tiri anything is possible.

Fernbird Info.
Maori Name(s) : Kotata, Matata.
Other names : Swamp Sparrow.
Abundance : uncommon. (although difficult to know as they are such shy birds.)
Status : Endemic, protected.
Found : Generally a swamp / wetland bird.

Along with giving you a full 35mm equivalent sensor, you'll get up to an impressive ISO 25600. A feature that's been highly praised in the Nikon D3. You also get the "Virtual Horizon" HUD like system that somehow missed being included with the D300, but made it in to the D3. The D700 (like the D3) will also "auto crop" the sensor for DX only (24 x 16) lenses. A big plus for those upgrading rather than buying from scratch. Like the D300, the D700 will also be compatible with the MB-D10 battery grip. Not only improving handling, but with the right battery set up giving you 8 frames per second shooting. (Also another potential plus for those upgrading.)

It doesn't look like Nikon have updated the live view modes available which is a shame as they are comparatively a bit slack. Also it appears they haven't included the duel compact flash capability of the D3. Something I sorely wish was included with the D300. Most likely a result of the Nikon intending to use the D300 body for the D700 and simple space issues. (Although thats not confirmed in the release.)

Some companies are now taking orders for around $3,000.00 USD, with a supposed expected ship date of the end of this month.
Time will tell if this actually happens or not. (I doubt it.)

So buy a Nikon D300 or D700?
Putting price aside, (and assuming Nikon doesn't quickly drop the D300 all together) its really going to depend on your needs and style of photography. If you shoot a lot of low light situations then its a no brainer. The D700's ISO 25,600 easily trumps the D300. Also those who shoot a lot of wide field scenes will want the D700. The full frame sensor means you'll actually be able to get that 8mm out of your new fish eye. Conversely if you photograph a lot of wildlife and need telephoto capabilities then the D300 should be considered. The D300's crop factor giving you an effective 600mm out your 400mm long lens.

Will I be upgrading to a D700?
Unlikely. It will be a big chunk of change to drop for relatively little extra. Thats money I can spend on things like a new T/S lens. Once you've got a good camera, (and the D300 is a very good camera), then its almost always better to spend cash on new glass rather than upgrading. That said I do look forward to reading the D700 reviews when they come out.

Ref Nikon's announcement : http://www.nikon.com/about/news/2008/0701_d700_01.htm.

Nikon has now included the D700 camera in its line up on their main website : http://imaging.nikon.com/products/imaging/lineup/digitalcamera/slr/d700/index.htm.

Photo info.
I couldn't post and not put up a new picture. Its another one from my last trip to Madison, WI. Its a self portrait taken on a pontoon on Lake Monona at night. The technique for this type of shot is real simple. Set up your camera for a 30 second night exposure. Click the shutter then walk out in to frame and stay still till you hear the shutter close. I like the ethereal feeling this photo has. Photographed with my Nikon D300 digital SLR. :-)
Another shot from Taranaki.

Simple landscape of a little set of batches outside of Te Nau Nau, down Taranaki way.
I was trying to get as low as possible to take this shot while not drowning in the mud. Hehe was lots of fun.

Having looked at this picture for a while I wonder if I shouldn't have avoided the mud and cropped this photo a lot closer. Imaged with my Nikon D300 digital SLR camera.

GCN news: I head off to the US this weekend, so not sure when the next update will be.
Hopefully not too long. (Could even be this weekend, but will probably be more random than normal.)
Picture of a waxing gibbous Moon.

Its really nice when you see something, guess the settings, dial 'em in, click the shutter and get a good result. That's the case here with my photo of a waxing gibbous Moon.

Tip:
Now that said, when you have a simple static model (like the Moon), take the time to experiment with different setting combinations on your camera. You might be surprised at the results. I used this chance to 1:1 compare several settings, including 12 bit verses 14 bit on my Nikon D300 digital SRL.

About the moon.
The Moon (Latin: Luna) is Earth's only natural satellite and the fifth largest satellite in the Solar System. The average centre-to-centre distance from the Earth to the Moon is 384,403 km, about thirty times the diameter of the Earth. The Moon is the only celestial body to which humans have travelled and upon which humans have performed a manned landing. The first artificial object to pass near the Moon was the Soviet Union's Luna 1, the first artificial object to impact the lunar surface was Luna 2, and the first photographs of the normally occluded far side of the Moon were made by Luna 3, all in 1959. The first spacecraft to perform a successful lunar soft landing was Luna 9, and the first unmanned vehicle to orbit the Moon was Luna 10, both in 1966. The United States Apollo program achieved the only manned missions to date, resulting in six landings between 1969 and 1972. Human exploration of the Moon ceased with the conclusion of the Apollo program, although a few robotic landers and orbiters have been sent to the Moon since that time. Several countries have announced plans to return humans to the surface of the Moon in the 2020s.

The first leap in lunar observation was prompted by the invention of the telescope. Galileo Galilei made good use of this new instrument and observed mountains and craters on the Moon's surface.

The Cold War-inspired space race between the Soviet Union and the U.S. led to an acceleration of interest in the Moon. Unmanned probes, both flyby and impact/lander missions, were sent almost as soon as launcher capabilities would allow. The Soviet Union's Luna program was the first to reach the Moon with unmanned spacecraft. The first man-made object to escape Earth's gravity and pass near the Moon was Luna 1, the first man-made object to impact the lunar surface was Luna 2, and the first photographs of the normally occluded far side of the Moon were made by Luna 3, all in 1959. The first spacecraft to perform a successful lunar soft landing was Luna 9 and the first unmanned vehicle to orbit the Moon was Luna 10, both in 1966. Moon samples have been brought back to Earth by three Luna missions (Luna 16, 20, and 24) and the Apollo missions 11 to 17 (except Apollo 13, which aborted its planned lunar landing).

Electric pillow, or playing with lasers again.

[electric pillow picture]

While playing on the weekend, I pulled out the green laser again.
Using a long exposure at night I was able to create this little bit of fun.

Tip:
I was able to keep the colour in the picture by leaving the lights in the room on for the first couple of seconds of the exposure.
Then I just killed the lights and painted the pillow with the laser as per normal...
Pic taken with my D300 DSLR of course...

See also my earlier photograph resulting from me playing with a green laser and a chess set.

Anyway thats it for today,
CYa's.
Auckland city at night in black and white.

So I couldn't be bothered editing a photo for today. Also its about time I started getting up some of the pictures that used to be posted on www.glen.co.nz back up.

This is a long exposure cityscape photograph of Auckland in black & white.
Its amazing, but this one of the most popular photo's I've ever taken.

You can also check out my colour Auckland cityscape photo, taken not far away from where this one was shot.

Photo taken 2007 with my Fuji digital camera.

This is repost pic #1 of ~~ 20.
Don't worry there will new photographs coming also.
