Juvenile Black-backed Gull flying photograph.

So I've been saying "well here's one from the to review pile" a lot lately. Well here's one from the "lost on an old hard drive pile". In fact so lost I didn't even know I had it. It s a photo of a juvenile Black-backed Gull and judging by the date (back in 2007) it was taken not long after I got my Nikon D300. Also working from the the date it was probably taken out at Muriwai beach which is north of Auckland. This was back before we had got interested in New Zealand wildlife and I probably kept it for no other reason than its an OK photo.

Black-backed Gull are a large sea / shorebird that takes about 4 years to reach maturity. The adult form is quite different to what you see in the picture here. Adults are all white except the back of their wings (connected via their back) is black. Hence their name. They are the only "large" Gull found in NZ.

Other Name(s) : Southern Black-backed Gull, Kelp Gull.
Abundance : Abundant.
New Zealand Status : Protected native.
Found (in NZ): Main NZ Islands, Chatham and subantarctic islands.
Subspecies photographed : Larus dominicanus dominicanus. The nominate subspecies found around NZ.

Australasian Gannet colony photograph.

Another quick photo post while I have a few free moments. This photo of the Gannet colony at Muriwai has been the background on one of my laptops for some time. Although I like the picture a lot, it hadn't occurred to me to post it. So here you go. This photo was taken on the same trip as my last flying Gannet photograph was taken.

Australasian Gannet in flight photograph.
I've started to go over the obscene backlog of photos I have to review. Happily I'm finding heaps to edit and publish. My reasons for publishing each differ. Some are simply "that was a cool shot", others are pics I intended to publish but forgot and others (like last weeks Furnbird picture) I just like the subject. There will be some fluctuation in time frame and quality of each photo. But why not. I still get to post photos I like.

Today's photo is of an Australasian Gannet flying. Yes more New Zealand native bird photos. I'll explain why tomorrow. This was photographed at the Muriwai colony September last year.

Muriwai at night

The Muriwai coast at night.

I didn't take a lot of photo's this weekend. So I started looking at what I had sitting around on disk ...
I found this little odd ball shot taken on the same night I shot this long exposure of the Muriwai rocks at night.

The neat thing about this long exposure is its an accidental shot. I had the camera (my Nikon D300 digital SRL)sitting on a fence post and it still had the same settings from earlier that night. Fiddling round in the dark I bumped the shutter release and just left it to take the shot. I never expected much out of it, and it was so out of alignment I'd never bothered looking at it before today. Bonus!

Pic #1 from my new toy.

This is a nice long exposure from Muriwai beach. Taken around dusk with my new Nikon D300 camera.
This is my first real long exposure "attempt" with the D300 digital SRL camera. Although I admit its more me playing than anything else.
Its the rocks at Muriwai just as start the walkway up the cliffs towards the gannets.
