Long-tailed Cuckoo Photo, New Zealand.

So last week I said there would be 2 new bird species added to the NZ Bird Photos section of the photo gallery. As NZ has been experiencing unseasonally bad holiday weather we were expecting to not get away. So I figured I'd have the time to post new additions. As it turned out there was a pseudo gap in the weather so we hit Pureora Forest Park for a few days camping and birding.

It paid off for us too with yet another new bird species to add to our list. The Long-tailed Cuckoo which were fairly numerous. For those visiting Pureora; the end of the road that leads to the buried forest [doc.govt.nz] is a great place to view Long-tailed Cuckoo birds. Of course you do need to be there during the summer months before they migrate back to the Western Pacific.

Another real plus and first species for us was Short-tailed Bat. Even better they were flying around the camping ground on the edge of the forest. This was the first time we had seen bats in NZ. While not possible to photograph the little critters it was really great being able to sit back beside the tent and watch them fly around in the evening sky.

The photo above is possible the worst picture of Long-tailed Cuckoo ever taken and is one of 3 frames I got. Not having my long lens with me did hamper things a little with photographing this bird. The picture is really a record photo. It does illustrate nicely one of my reasons for the new gallery. This photo is not great, but it is a new bird species which can be added. In the future hopefully considerably more, much better Long-tailed Cuckoo photos will be added.
